At Admin Slayer, we’re huge fans of Adam Grant, the organizational psychologist who writes and talks about how to not make work suck. As you can likely imagine, making work not suck, both for the business owners we support and our amazing team of slayers, is really important to us.

Since you are a person who works, it’s probably pretty important to you too. Recently, Adam wrote an article called “The Real Meaning for Freedom at Work”. It was an interesting perspective that we think a lot of business owners share; the idea that work isn’t just about cashing cheques with the right dollar figures, but being able to decide your own purpose, your people, and your priorities.

We think October is an outstanding time of year to really spend thought on this concept. You could choose to continue to run flat out, taking on other people’s urgencies, and putting out fires. But, honestly, what kind of fun is that? Not only will it leave you feeling burnt out and disinterested in work, but it will also keep you from looking inward at your goals and ambitions.

You’ve had the full month of September, and most of October, to get back from holidays, adjust to school and work schedules, and really shift your focus. You probably have enough data to really dig into your life - personal and professional - in order to make the kind of strategic decisions that will get you so much closer to living your purpose, with your people, and tackling your priorities in line with your values.

Even if you have been doing a great job of focusing on your own key initiatives, there are probably some things that fell off the track. That’s often because when we have spent time fixing this thing over here, we drop the ball on that thing over there. This is why our theme this year is all about recovery. We’ve already written about leadership, communications, pivoting, staffing, institutional memory, marketing, finances, and business relationships

This month, we’re focused on the recovery of something incredibly vital in business today - especially since the pandemic: technology.  If you’re more of a “people” person than you are a “tech” person, not to worry! As Tracey points out in this month’s feature, taking care of your technology means taking care of the people who use it.

We’re also excited to introduce you to LaDawn, who joined our team in March of this year. An administrative whiz with project management and marketing skills, LaDawn has equal amounts competence and joie de vivre, making her an outstanding addition to our team!

Finally, if you’ve struggled to keep focus, we feel your pain. It’s ADHD Awareness month, and not only do some of our own team members manage this, so do a significant number of business owners. It’s almost a superpower, but of course, it comes with its downsides. Here are some great - quick! - tips from Krysten about how you can win with ADHD.
