Mia joined Admin Slayer in 2021 as a specialist in writing and proofreading, after retiring from her teaching career and wanting some casual work. Being a lifelong lover of learning and always up for a challenge, Mia brings a high level of professionalism to any written product internally or for our clients. Mia has been able to step into different industries, understand their jargon and content, and add value and polish. Coupled with the desire to master new systems and technologies, Mia has impressed as a difference maker.

“Word play” is a hobby of sorts for Mia - toying with words and ideas - seeing where they go and what she can learn through that exploration. She enjoys writing poetry because it makes her pay attention to words and meanings. Not surprisingly, Mia has also dabbled in several languages: French, German, Old English, Spanish and, most currently, Icelandic.

Speaking of her love of words and culture, Mia has become the editor of the Icelandic Canadian Club of BC Newsletter. Although it’s a small club, working on the newsletter hones Mia’s organizational and creative writing skills - with the added bonus of helping her reconnect with her Icelandic roots.

Mia, who considers herself a “learning teacher”, loves to facilitate other people’s learning as opposed to telling them “how”. She has a warm, endearing, and quirky demeanor which, along with her ability to laugh at herself when (IF!) she makes a mistake, means she is a joy to work with.

In addition to her writing and editing activities, Mia enjoys working with her hands. Whether that’s sewing, gardening, roofing a cabin or rewiring a lamp, she’s not likely to back down from a challenge. She returned to skating so that she could help teach her two young grandchildren. When they get a bit taller, we’re certain Mia will be shooting hoops with them too!

Joining the Admin Slayer team has been a gift – an opportunity to transition from being a full-time educator to exploring a whole new work-world that lets me learn and grow. It’s flexible part-time, so if life is too busy, I work at the edges of the day – often in the quiet of evening. I get to do what I’m good at and passionate about: ‘playing’ with words and crafting sentences so they’re meaningful and clear, which helps others communicate effectively and present themselves confidently and professionally.
